Sustainable production and consumption: Design for disassembly as a circular economy tool

This United Nations Environment Programme Foresight Brief examines “Design for Disassembly” (DfD) as a critical tool for enabling a circular economy and addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. DfD involves designing products from the outset to be easily taken apart, allowing components and materials to be reused, repaired, remanufactured, or recycled, thereby retaining their value and reducing waste.

The brief underscores the urgent need to shift from a linear “take-make-dispose” model, highlighting that resource extraction and processing are major drivers of environmental degradation. DfD is presented as a key strategy to improve resource efficiency, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and alleviate pressure on ecosystems.

Practical applications across three high-impact sectors are detailed:

  1. Construction: With most future buildings yet to be built, DfD offers immense potential for reducing waste and enabling material recovery, as seen in projects like Venlo City Hall and Park 20|20 in the Netherlands, which use material passports and reversible connections.
  2. Electronics: As the fastest-growing waste stream, DfD can mitigate the environmental impact of electronic waste. Examples include Fairphone’s modular smartphones and AIAIAI’s headphones, designed for user repair and part replacement.
  3. Textiles: To combat rampant clothing waste and low recycling rates, “circular design” principles akin to DfD are emerging. Initiatives like redesigning denim for recyclability and designers using detachable garment components demonstrate this shift.

The report also discusses challenges, such as consumer priorities (e.g., aesthetics vs. repairability), fast fashion narratives, and the need for supportive infrastructure and policies. Opportunities lie in policy frameworks like the European Green Deal, economic incentives, rising consumer awareness, and the potential for job creation. Ultimately, widespread adoption of DfD requires coordinated action from policymakers, producers, and consumers, supported by clear regulations, financial signals, and a shift in societal norms towards sustainable consumption.
